This St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church was erected in 1849 at the corner of East 12th & Spring Sts. It was dedicated January 20, 1850 by German Catholics from the old St. Mary's Church who lived east of Clay Street. St. Paulus Kirche was the 9th Catholic Church in Cincinnati.  A fire in 1899 destroyed all but the church walls and the stained glass windows. It was reconstructed and dedicated on October 7, 1900. Deconsecrated in 1974 it was named to the National Register of Historic Places the same year. Threatened with demolition in 1981 the Verdin Company bought the building and converted it into St. Paul's Church Mart, a unique display and sales center for church goods which draws people from across the nation. Sometime after the first card was produced the name of Spring Street was changed to Pendleton Street and now the building's address is 1117 Pendleton Street.

SS.  PETER  AND  PAUL // HOLY  TRINITY  NORWOOD

Norwood Peter & Paul.jpg (221419 bytes)    *Altar, S. S. Peter and Paul Church, Norwood Heights.jpg (56980 bytes)
  Sts. Peter and  Paul   Norwood

The Holy Trinity parish dates back to 1884 when St. Elizabeth was founded as Norwood's first Catholic Church. In 1905 the Archdiocese of Cincinnati established St. Matthew church and Sts. Peter & Paul church. Permanent facilities were built for St. Matthew in 1922 and for Sts. Peter & Paul in 1940.
The SS Peter and Paul church above was dedicated on July 21, 1907 on Montgomery Road. This small church seated 350 people. 26 children held classes in 3 small rooms at the back of the church. All three Norwood churches operated their own grammar schools. In 1974, St. Elizabeth and St. Matthew schools combined to form Gressle School that was located at the St. Matthew location. In the early 1980s, Sts. Peter & Paul School closed and joined the Gressle School.
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati decided to combine all three parishes into one due to declining enrollment in 1991. It was decided that the Sts. Peter & Paul property was best suited to meet the needs of the new parish. In addition to the new parish, Gressle School was renamed Holy Trinity School and moved to the former Sts. Peter & Paul School buildings. (see 1st photographic image below) at the corner of Drex and Moeller Aves. . In 2007 Holy Trinity School combined with St. John the Evangalist and renamed it St. Nicholas Academy and was located at St. John the Evangalist. In 2010 they then combined with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) and is now located at OLSH's campus.

Holy Trinity church is located on the corner of Montgomery Road and Drex Ave. The next 5 images are extra large postcards. Each of the churches towers are dedicated to the Sts. Peter & Paul. The figures of Sts. Peter & Paul guard either side of the entrance. The church was dedicated on June 30, 1940. The left and right altar pieces below form what is referred to as a triptych, an altarpiece in 3 parts. The two wings are designed to form shutters which may be closed over the central altar during Passion-tide. Designed in 1941 the Christmas Crib is considered the most beautiful and most complete Crib in the United States. For instance it is the only Crib in the world where the Magi and their attendants wear Phrygion cloaks and helmets.

As you can see in the 4th card above St. Rosa Church is situated right next to the Ohio River. Over the years the church has been flooded many times. On the back wall of the church is painted the flood gauge you see in the first photo below. At the top of this gauge is where the flood of 1937 crested. The church was built in 1867 and is still active today. On April 1, 1982 the church was added to the National Register of Historical Places.

St. Williams. Price Hill                                                                              The New St. Williams

The 1st card above is of the St. William Church Dedicated on May 22, 1910 at the corner of Sunset Ave. & West 8th St. in Price Hill. The congregation , largely German and Irish immigrants, experienced exceptional growth and by 1931 they needed a much bigger church. The new church was constructed in 1931 at 1401 W. Eighth Street. This church includes a parish house, Sisters' residence, and a community center. This was a massive undertaking during the depression and it cost so much the parish went deeply into debt ($462,000). In order to pay this debt off the Rev. Francis Reardon started, what is believed to be the very first bingo games sponsored by a church. These games became so popular that people came from as far away as Indianapolis to play. From 20 to 25 street cars would be seen lined up after the games were over to take people home. The last non-postcard image above shows the church as it looks today.

Below is something very hard to find. It shows a little of how a postcard is produced. When the church wanted to have some postcards made of the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto that was located outside, by the street, they had the photographers Rombach & Groene take the 8" x 10" photograph seen in the 1st image. Then whoever was in charge of the project used white out to show the rough outline of the top of the card. He (or she) also marked where he wanted the sides to be. They then sent this along with the attached note to the Asheville Postcard Co. in Asheville, North Carolina. This note states where they wanted the title and what the title should say. They then stated that they wanted 1000 black and white cards. This was obviously changed later to color. The note also states that they wanted sky where the white was in the photograph. The 3rd image is the resulting postcard. The 4th image is a postcard produced by the Albertype Postcard Co. They obviously had different instructions.

St. Xavier Church was originally built at Liberty and Vine Sts. because anti-Catholic sentiment prevented it being constructed closer to the center of the city. In 1825 members defiantly put the church frame on wheels and rolled it down to its present location at 607 Sycamore St. The original location is now the St. Francis Church in Over-the-Rhine.
